Among the most popular and enduring Italian majolica patterns, the classic 'Raffaellesco' originates from the 16th century and features the graceful arabesques found in Raphael's famous frescoes.
The stylized dragon in the central motif is believed to have been painted first by Raphael, a master painter and architect of the Italian High Renaissance.
Raffaellesco is considered a benevolent deity who bestows good luck and fair winds upon seagoing merchants, which explains the puffs of wind emanating from the dragon's mouth.
While the earthenware material, colors, and glazing are the same as those in our Raffaellesco Deluxe collection, this version is less intricate and, therefore, quicker to produce, resulting in a lower production cost.
